The Op-amp comparator compares one analogue voltage level with another analogue voltage level, or some preset reference voltage, V REF and produces an output signal based on this voltage comparison. Comparator compares the two input signals out of which one is always fixed (i.e. reference signal). The two signals are always voltages. Thus comparator is a circuit which compares the input signal with the known reference voltage applied at other terminal and produces either high or low output voltage depending on which input is higher.

Thus a comparator compares two voltage levels and determines which one of the two is higher. In our simple example above, V REF is obtained from the voltage divider network setup by R 1 and R 2. If the two resisors are of equal values, that is R 1 = R 2, then clearly the reference voltage level will be equal to half the supply voltage, or V/2.
